PH is 35 years old originally from Bangladesh. She moved to Newcastle with her family from Italy in February 2021. They found it a little difficult at first due to the language barrier. They settled in Newham in October 2022 which they found less daunting as they had family in Newham. She said “I like living in Newham because everything I need is local and people are friendly.”
In Italy, PH worked at a GP surgery as an interpreter (Italian/Bengali). She likes working, but she wants to improve her English and computer skills first. PH is currently completing Basic Digital Skills and an ESOL course, through our Training and Education project.
She enrolled onto Essential Digital Skills Level 1 course in September and will continue to a higher level of ESOL. Her passion is baking; therefore, she’ll be enrolling on a baking course at the Newham College in September. She said “my goal is to have a cake shop so I need to improve my English and computer skills.”
She now has more confidence with creating promotional documents and using social media. PF did a computer course at another centre but said she didn’t learn very much. She said, “the teacher is friendly and very helpful – I have learned so much.”
