We are recruiting two new trustees to join our board
Can you contribute to creating vibrant and integrated Newham communities?
We are looking to diversify our board to reflect our amazing Newham population, staff and volunteer teams and all those who use our services.
We are excited to announce that we are seeking two new trustees to join our board. This opportunity is open to anyone aged over 18 years who shares our vision of vibrant and integrated Newham communities, where everyone has access to suitable jobs, homes, health and education. Embedded within our local community for over 50 years, we work to tackle the causes and consequences of poverty; isolation; and disadvantage in Newham. Our services include supported housing; foodbank services; advocacy; youth and young carers services; adult education; immigration advice and energy advice. We also deliver a range of community cohesion activities and have recently taken over a meanwhile use site to develop for community benefit. Our holistic approach is proven to support people away from a point of crisis and towards safety and wellbeing. Our work is informed by our core values of dignity; inclusion; collaboration; and empowerment.
Our goal is to cultivate a board that mirrors the vibrant diversity of Newham’s community, including our dedicated staff, volunteers, and the individuals we serve. We are looking for trustees who are strategic thinkers, inherently curious, and driven by ambition. Your role will be pivotal in our journey towards developing a new strategic plan for 2024 – 2027. A good understanding of Newham’s unique landscape—its challenges and opportunities—would be beneficial.
Whether you’re experienced in charity governance or new to the role of a trustee, we are prepared to support your journey. Comprehensive training will be provided, ensuring you are well-equipped to contribute effectively. You’ll join a board and a senior management team that are not only welcoming but also deeply committed to fostering a supportive and collaborative environment.
We are committed to building a board that truly represents the diversity of the communities we serve. We believe in the power of diverse perspectives and so particularly welcome applications by individuals from a variety of religious, cultural, and global
majority backgrounds. Your unique experiences and insights will be invaluable as we work together to create a more inclusive and equitable future.
For more details on the role and the qualities we’re looking for, please refer to the attached trustee role description and person specification.
You will need to give enough time for preparation and attendance at 6 Board meetings and three committee meetings per year, at approximately 2 hours per meeting. You will also need to set aside one day per year for a board strategic planning away day. Meetings are held in person and also supported by hybrid formats for enhanced flexibility.
As an established multi-purpose charity, we can offer you a fulfilling and rewarding experience. You will have a key impact on our mission, help oversee our strategic vision, influence community focussed projects and help manage risk. The role offers an opportunity to develop a broad range of skills and experience related to the management and operation of our charity, as well as opportunities for personal development and training. The Trustee position is voluntary, with expenses reimbursed.
We encourage all potential applicants to initiate contact before submitting a formal application. You can do this by contacting our CEO Peter Laing via email: peter.laing@renewalprogramme.org.uk.
If you are unsure whether to apply then please do arrange an informal and friendly chat with either Dave Eldridge our Chair, or Peter Laing. Once again you can arrange this by contacting peter.laing@renewalprogramme.org.uk We would be delighted to talk to you more about the role.
To submit a formal application, please send your CV and a brief covering letter detailing your interest in the role and the skills and attributes you bring (maximum 500 words) to peter.laing@renewalprogramme.org.uk.
Please do join us in making a meaningful impact in Newham. Together, we can shape a future that reflects the strength and diversity of our community.
Thank you!

What is our employee assistance plan?
The Renewal Programme has set up an Employee Assistance Programme with Health Assured.
