Student Mental Health infographic by OKRehab
When people hear the term ‘cost of living crisis’ people might imagine parents struggling to put food on the table, elderly loved ones sitting in the cold and people counting their pennies during the weekly food shop.
However, no one really seems to be talking about how the cost of living crisis is impacting students whilst studying at University.
Most students at University had their last few years at University affected by the Coronavirus pandemic [1]. For those that did manage to get to University, their University years have now been tainted with the cost of living crisis.
Students are renowned for struggling with money at the best of times. As we all know, financial strains can put a huge pressure on people’s mental health [2]. Students already suffer from a range of mental health issues at University, due to being away from home for the first time, stress from their studies and peer pressure [3].
Lots of students also suffer from mental health issues due to excessive alcohol and drug abuse, which is very common at University.
Universities across the UK need to be prepared for a surge in mental health issues and substance use disorders due to the stress and pressure that the cost of living crisis has created.
Our infographic below explains the true extent of how the cost of living crisis is affecting the wellbeing of students up and down the country [4].
